Alder, a village sorcerer on Gont, is haunted by dreams in which the dead call him across the dry stone wall of the afterlife. He seeks Ged, now living as a farmer after laying down the Archmage's power, and is sent on to Havnor, where King Lebannen faces restless dragons and a failing compact between the living and the dead. With Tenar, Tehanu, and the dragon-woman Irian, the company travels to Roke and then to the farthest west, where the wall that keeps human souls from the world's wind is examined and remade. The novel is the last Earthsea narrative, a story of death, names, and the bargain between people and dragons.
