This ancient Greek tragic trilogy, usually titled the Oresteia and first produced in 458 BCE, follows the house of Atreus after the Trojan War. In Agamemnon, the king returns to Argos and is murdered by Clytemnestra. In The Libation Bearers, their son Orestes, urged by Electra and Apollo, kills his mother and her lover Aegisthus. In The Eumenides, the Furies pursue Orestes to Athens, where Athena founds a court that tries the blood-guilt and transforms the chase into civic justice. The work is a connected sequence of tragedies about vengeance and law, not a single play about the Trojan War.
