Synopsis
This ancient Greek epic follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, in the years after the fall of Troy as he tries to return home. The wanderings include the cave of the Cyclops, Circe's island, a descent to the dead, the Sirens, and a long detention on Calypso's island before the Phaeacians send him onward. In Ithaca his wife Penelope holds off the suitors who are consuming the household, and his son Telemachus goes in search of news. The poem intercuts the voyage with the crisis on the island and moves toward the contest that will decide the house.
