First published in 1897, this anthology collects English nursery rhymes, singing games, riddles, and lullabies, grouped by kind: historical or legendary fragments, animal verses, counting-out rhymes, and nonsense. Lang's notes suggest origins or parallels when he can, without turning each jingle into a full history. Familiar pieces such as Jack and Jill and The Queen of Hearts sit beside less printed rhymes. The book is a children's verse collection with light commentary, not a single narrative and not a study of one poet.
