The Northanger Set of Jane Austen Horrid Novels
Castle of Wolfenbach
By Eliza Parsons · 1968
Back to CatalogueThis set gathers the seven Gothic novels named by Isabella Thorpe in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Written in the 1790s, they send persecuted heroines through ruined castles, secret chambers, forced marriages, and Italian or German landscapes, with bandits, monks, and unexplained voices. Two of the tales, The Castle of Wolfenbach and The Mysterious Warning, are by Eliza Parsons; the others are by Roche, Sleath, Lathom, Kahlert, and Grosse. The collection is a group of circulating-library horrors of the 1790s, not a work by Austen and not a single continuous novel.
