Synopsis
This history combines two studies first published in 1969 and 1976. Douglas treats the Normans as a single expanding force between about 1050 and 1154, comparing their conquests in England, southern Italy and Sicily, and Antioch. He follows duke and king, church reform, castle and cavalry, and the politics of papacy and crusade, then the later fortunes of Norman rule under Henry I, Roger II, and their heirs. The book is a comparative political history of Norman power in Europe and the Levant, not a biography of William I alone.
