This two-part narrative history, first published as The White Nile in 1960 and The Blue Nile in 1962, follows European exploration and power along the river in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The White Nile strand traces Burton, Speke, Grant, Baker, Livingstone, and Stanley in the search for the great lakes and the river's source, then Gordon and the Mahdist war at Khartoum. The Blue Nile strand follows James Bruce in Ethiopia, Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, and later expeditions on the Ethiopian branch. The book is a history of exploration and conquest along one river, not a hydrology of the Nile.
