A circus that opens only at night, Le Cirque des Reves, appears without warning and is itself the arena for a contest between two young illusionists, Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair. Bound as children by their rival teachers, they are set to outdo each other in feats that look like theatre but are genuine magic. Around them a circle of performers, a clockmaker, and devoted followers called reveurs live by the circus's rules, while the wider world of late nineteenth-century cities remains only half aware of what the tents contain. The novel follows how the competition shapes the circus and the people drawn into its black-and-white tents.
