Published in 1881, this Trollope novel follows the orphaned sisters Ayala and Lucy Dormer after their artist father dies in debt. Wealthy Aunt Tringle takes the vivid Ayala; the poorer Admiralty clerk Uncle Dosett takes Lucy; later the girls are exchanged when Ayala refuses the Tringle son Tom. Ayala waits for an ideal Angel of Light and is courted by Tom, a foolish captain, and the plain, forceful Colonel Stubbs. Lucy, moved into the rich house, loves a sculptor who has no money. The book is a courtship comedy about two sisters, two households, and the gap between romance and a possible husband.
