Synopsis
This later compilation of criminal biographies continues the Newgate tradition into the nineteenth century. Short lives follow thieves, forgers, poisoners, and murderers from a first offense through trial and execution, with moral comment and courtroom detail. The cases are drawn from later calendars and trial reports rather than from the earliest eighteenth-century registers, and they dwell on the moment when a private crime becomes a public hanging. The volume is a collected true-crime anthology, not a single Newgate novel and not a history of the prison building.
