Synopsis
First published in 1838, this first-person narrative follows the New Englander Pym, who stows away on the whaler Grampus. Mutiny, storm, and starvation at sea give way to cannibalism among survivors, rescue by the schooner Jane Guy, and a voyage farther south. On the island of Tsalal the crew meets a dark-skinned people and a land of strange color taboos; the last pages push into a white Antarctic blank. The book is a hoax-voyage novel, not a real polar journal.
