Synopsis
This two-volume set gathers archaeological accounts of the two principal Bronze Age civilizations of the Aegean. One volume treats Mycenaean citadels, burials, and Linear B, the earliest readable Greek; the other treats Minoan Crete, its palaces, towns, and painting, with essays on Arthur Evans and on Thera. Maps and plans chart sites from the Greek mainland to Crete and the Cyclades. The work is a paired history of palatial cultures before classical Greece, not a picture book of ruins and not a myth cycle of Minos or Agamemnon.
