Its Causes and Consequences, the Eventful History of The

By Sir John Barrow · 1998

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1831, this history reconstructs the 1789 mutiny on HMS Bounty from logs, courts-martial, and later testimonies. Barrow follows Captain William Bligh's breadfruit voyage, the seizure of the ship by Fletcher Christian and part of the crew, Bligh's open-boat passage to Timor, the wreck of the Pandora, the trial of captured mutineers, and the settlement on Pitcairn Island. He weighs charges of tyranny against Bligh and of crime against the mutineers. The book is a documentary naval history, not a romantic novel of the South Seas.
