Synopsis
First published in 1946, this detective novel opens when the poet Richard Cadogan, arriving late in Oxford, finds a dead woman in a toyshop on a side street. By morning the shop has become a grocery and the body is gone. He turns to Gervase Fen, an Oxford professor of English who treats detection as a game. The pair chase a will, a group of heirs, and a shop that will not stay put. The book is a comic mystery, not a guidebook to Oxford.
