Published in 1868, this novel concerns a large yellow diamond taken from an Indian shrine and given to Rachel Verinder on her eighteenth birthday at a Yorkshire country house. The same night the stone disappears. Sergeant Cuff of Scotland Yard, household servants, Rachel's cousin Franklin Blake, and three Indian jugglers who have followed the diamond all become part of the inquiry. The story is told by successive narrators, including the steward Gabriel Betteredge and the evangelical Miss Clack. It is a detective novel about theft, opium, and the afterlife of an imperial spoil, not a supernatural tale. The house party and the missing gem organise the plot.
