A Christmas Carol in Prose
Being a Ghost Story of Christmas
By Charles Dickens · 2003
Back to CatalogueSynopsis
First published in 1843, this short novel follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly London businessman who scorns Christmas, his clerk Bob Cratchit, and a nephew who keeps inviting him to dinner. On Christmas Eve the ghost of his partner Jacob Marley and three spirits show him his past, the present joys and wants of people he knows, and a future that waits if he remains unchanged. The setting is the winter city of counting-houses and poor homes. The book is a ghost story and moral fable, not a collection of carols.
