Synopsis
This volume pairs two autobiographical works. The Mirror of the Sea, first published in 1906, gathers essays on ships, winds, harbors, and the craft of seafaring from Conrad's years in the French and British merchant service, including the landing of arms on the Spanish coast and the feel of command. A Personal Record, first published in 1912, turns to his Polish childhood, his choice of the sea, and the writing of his first novel, Almayer's Folly. The book is a seaman-novelist's memoir in two parts, not a continuous novel of the merchant marine.
