This historical novel opens in 1536 as Thomas Cromwell, now Lord Privy Seal, has just seen Anne Boleyn executed and must keep Henry VIII supplied with a new marriage, money, and obedience. Cromwell manages the king's wedding to Jane Seymour, the birth of Prince Edward, the suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace, and the Cleves match, while old charges, court factions, and the king's temper gather around him. The narrative stays close to Cromwell's memory, household, and papers in London and at court. The book is the closing volume of a trilogy about one minister, not a general history of the English Reformation.
