The Minoans
With Essays by J. Lesley Fitton
By J. Lesley Fitton, Phyllis Young Forsyth, Sinclair Hood · 2004
Back to CatalogueThis volume surveys Bronze Age Crete through archaeology: palaces such as Knossos, Phaistos, and Mallia, town sites, burials, trade, and the still unread Linear A script. Fitton traces the rise and destruction of Minoan complexes, the place of women in imagery, and later Mycenaean presence on the island. Three appended essays take up Arthur Evans's excavations and reconstructions at Knossos, the Late Bronze Age town on Thera, and surviving Minoan wall painting. The book is a historical and archaeological account of one Aegean civilization, not a retelling of the Minotaur myth.
