First published in 1927, this children's novel follows Kay Harker, a boy in an English country house watched by the governess Sylvia Daisy Pouncer and by two guardians who want him kept dull and indoors. At night toys, cats, and other creatures come alive as the Midnight Folk and help Kay search for treasure once entrusted to his great-grandfather, a sea captain, and taken by the wizard Abner Brown. Witches, foxes, and a highwayman's ghost join the hunt across cellars, woods, and the past. The book is a treasure-quest fantasy of a child's nights, not a school story and not a later Harker sequel.
