This medieval French chantefable, probably from the thirteenth century, mixes sung verse with prose. Aucassin, son of the Count of Beaucaire, loves Nicolette, a captive baptised as a Christian and said to be of Saracen birth. His parents forbid the match and imprison them both. They escape, wander through comic and violent adventures - including a topsy-turvy kingdom - and are separated by storm and capture before each learns the other's true rank. The work parodies chivalric romance even as it insists on the lovers' constancy. It is a short tale of forbidden love told in alternating voices of song and narrative.
