Synopsis
This essay analyzes Adolf Hitler's political life by successive headings: the facts of his career, what he achieved, why he succeeded for a time, the mistakes and crimes of the later years, and the betrayal of the German state in defeat. Haffner treats Hitler as a phenomenon of mass politics and war rather than as a conventional biographical subject, and he argues about responsibility and the nature of the regime. The book is a short interpretive study, not a day-by-day life and not a military history of the Second World War.
