This naval novel gives Jack Aubrey a commodore's broad pendant and a squadron with orders to take the French Indian Ocean islands of Reunion and Mauritius. Stephen Maturin sails as physician and intelligence agent. The plot follows convoy work, ship-to-ship actions, and the politics of a mixed command, including a jealous senior captain and a newly married Aubrey writing home. The campaign is based on the historical reduction of those islands in the Napoleonic wars. The book is one volume in a long sea sequence, not a staff history of the whole ocean war.
