Written in the 1930s and first published in the 1960s, this novel splits between Moscow and ancient Jerusalem. In Moscow, the devil Woland and his retinue - including a huge talking cat - disrupt literary bureaucrats, theater people, and a housing committee, while the Master, a writer destroyed by attacks on his Pontius Pilate novel, is tended by Margarita. In the Jerusalem strand, the procurator Pilate questions Yeshua Ha-Notsri and cannot escape the consequences. The book is a satirical fantasy of cowardice, art, and power, not a historical novel of Rome alone.
