This science-fiction novel follows Mark Watney, an astronaut left behind on Mars when a dust storm forces his crew to abort the Ares 3 mission. Believed dead, he inventories food, water, and equipment at the habitat and sets about growing potatoes, making water, and crossing the planet toward a landing site that might allow rescue. On Earth, NASA and the remaining crew reconstruct what happened and argue over risk. The book is a problem-solving survival story of one stranded engineer, not a first-contact tale.
