This scholarly book transcribes, translates, and comments on the painted legends of the Hereford world map, a large vellum mappa mundi made around 1300. Westrem treats more than a thousand inscriptions that name cities, rivers, monsters, biblical scenes, and marvels on a disk centered on Jerusalem, with the East at the top. Each entry gives the Latin, an English rendering, and notes on sources such as Pliny, Solinus, and medieval itineraries. An introduction sets out the map's history and its relation to a newly identified explanatory text. The work is a documentary edition, not a general atlas of the Middle Ages.
