First published in 1957, this novel is set in a declining United States where railways, steel, and oil are failing under regulation and public demand. Dagny Taggart struggles to keep Taggart Transcontinental running; the industrialist Hank Rearden defends a new metal and a private life that the state and his family both claim. Inventors and producers disappear, leaving the question 'Who is John Galt?' The plot follows Dagny's search for the men who have withdrawn, and for the philosophy that justifies that withdrawal. It is a long didactic romance of industry, in which the central conflict is between makers and those who live by their output.
