Synopsis
This novel, drawn from the last part of the d'Artagnan cycle first issued in the late 1840s, concerns a prisoner in the Bastille whose face is hidden by an iron mask and who is said to be the twin of Louis XIV. Aramis, now a prelate, plots to substitute the prisoner for the king; Athos, Porthos, and d'Artagnan are pulled into the scheme and its consequences at Vaux and at court. The book is a historical romance of succession and old comrades, not a documentary life of the historical masked prisoner.
