This four-volume history follows the making of the industrial and political world from the late eighteenth century to the end of the Soviet era. The first volume appeared in 1962. Hobsbawm treats the dual revolution of France and industry, the global spread of liberal capitalism, the age of imperial rivalry before 1914, and the short twentieth century of world wars, depression, and the collapse of the socialist states. Economy, class, and ideology are the main engines; culture and science appear as parts of the same system. The set is a Marxist survey of two centuries, not a sequence of national political biographies.
