This second novel of an Arthurian trilogy is set in 1200 on the Welsh Marches. Fourteen-year-old Arthur de Caldicot leaves the household that raised him to serve as squire to Lord Stephen at Holt, training for the Fourth Crusade. He already knows that his blood father is not the knight he called father, and he means to find his mother. A seeing stone given by Merlin still shows him scenes from the life of King Arthur - the sword, the Round Table, and the Grail - beside his own duties, friendships, and a new attachment to Winnie de Verdon. The book is a coming-of-age journal at a historical and legendary crossing.
