First published in 1955, this historical study reads the English countryside as an artifact made by clearance, ploughing, enclosure, and building rather than as untouched nature. Hoskins follows prehistoric fields, Roman roads, the open-field village, Tudor hedges, parliamentary enclosure, parks, industrial scars, and the modern road. He works from maps, surviving earthworks, and parish evidence, county by county in method even when the chapters are general. The book is a history of landscape change, not a guidebook for walkers and not a geological survey.
