First published in 1975, this short illustrated history traces the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew from adjacent royal riverside estates to a public scientific garden. Bingham follows Princess Augusta's botanic garden, the buildings and follies raised in the eighteenth century, the union of the Kew and Richmond grounds under George III, and the later work of Joseph Banks and the Hookers in turning the site into a center for plant collecting and classification. The book is an institutional sketch of one garden's making, not a botanical manual.
