Synopsis
First published in 1924, this novel follows Hans Castorp, a young Hamburg engineer who visits his cousin Joachim at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Davos and remains for years. The house has its own time, measured in rest cures, X-rays, and meals. Castorp hears the humanist Settembrini and the radical Naphta argue, is drawn to Clavdia Chauchat, and watches patients recover or decline. The plain below moves toward European war. The book is a Bildungsroman of illness and ideas, not a medical case history.
