Synopsis
First published in 1847, this is Trollope's first novel, set among a decaying Catholic gentry family in County Leitrim. Thady MacDermot tries to hold the crumbling house of Ballycloran while his father drinks, his sister Feemy is courted by the revenue policeman Myles Ussher, and tenants and Ribbonmen press from below. Rent, eviction, and a violent quarrel over Feemy drive the household toward the courts. The book is a tragic novel of Irish land and family ruin, not a parliamentary tale of English county society.
