Synopsis
This is a collection of medieval Welsh prose tales preserved mainly in the White Book of Rhydderch and the Red Book of Hergest. The Four Branches follow Pryderi, Rhiannon, Branwen, and the enchantment of Dyfed; later pieces include the dream of Macsen Wledig, the hunt of Culhwch and Olwen, and three romances that share matter with Arthurian story. Kings, otherworld wives, and impossible tasks structure the plots. The book is a cycle of native and courtly narratives, not a single novel and not a history of Wales.
