This fourteenth-century English psalter, made for the Lincolnshire knight Sir Geoffrey Luttrell, presents the Latin Psalms with a calendar, canticles, and the Office of the Dead, written by a single scribe and framed by painted initials and line-fillers. Its margins are filled with scenes of ploughing, harvest, cooking, music, and grotesque hybrids, as well as portraits of the Luttrell household. Michelle P. Brown's commentary sets the book in its manor and workshop and reads those images as a record of rural labor and patronage. The volume is a deluxe prayer book, not a modern novel of medieval life.
