Synopsis
This travel narrative follows Bill Bryson on a long car journey through small-town America, beginning from childhood memories of Des Moines and moving state by state along back highways. He describes motels, diners, civic monuments, tourist traps, and the gap between remembered hometowns and what he finds. Local boosters, bored clerks, and fellow travellers supply the encounters; there is no quest beyond seeing the interior of the country. The book is a comic tour of provincial places, not a history of the United States and not a memoir of family life alone.
