The Lost City of the Incas

Story of MacHu Picchu and Its Builders

By Hiram Bingham · 2004

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1948, this first-person account describes Hiram Bingham's 1911 expedition in the Andes, when a local guide led him to the ruins later called Machu Picchu, and the later seasons of clearing, measuring, and speculation. Bingham mixes travel narrative with a reconstruction of the last Inca resistance around Vilcabamba and a claim about what the site had been. Mules, river crossings, stone terraces, and the rivalry of Peruvian and American claims on the finds occupy the book. It is an explorer's report and argument, not a full archaeology of the Inca state.
