Synopsis
First published in 1871, this fantasy follows Diamond, a coachman's son living over a London stable, who is visited at night by the North Wind in the form of a woman. She carries him over the city and the sea, shows him storms and kindnesses, and at last takes him to the country at her back, a still place beyond ordinary weather. On the ground, Diamond's family faces poverty, illness, and a drunken cabman neighbour. The book joins a child's nightly journeys to a realist account of working London, asking what goodness can do in a world of cold and want.
