The Longest Day

D-Day Story, June 6, 1944

By Cornelius Ryan · 2019

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1959, this narrative history reconstructs the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944. Ryan follows paratroopers, infantry, sailors, and airmen on the British, American, and Canadian beaches and inland drops, and he also tracks German commanders as they try to read the invasion and release their reserves. The method is episodic and clock-driven: many named participants are shown in the hours before and during the assault. The book is a multi-viewpoint account of one day of the campaign, not a full history of the battle for France.
