The Long Weekend

A Social History of Great Britain 1918-1939

By Robert Graves, Alan Hodge · 2009

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1940, this social history surveys Britain between the Armistice of 1918 and the outbreak of war in 1939. Graves and Hodge move through politics, fashion, sport, radio, cinema, housing, and the changing manners of class, sex, and leisure, treating newspapers and advertisements as evidence alongside ministries and strikes. Prime ministers and bright young people appear as markers of successive seasons rather than as heroes of a single story. The book is a year-by-year portrait of interwar civilian life, not a military history of the two wars that bound it.
