This science-fiction novel follows Rosemary Harper, who joins the tunneling ship Wayfarer as a clerk under a new identity. The multi-species crew, led by Captain Ashby, takes a contract to bore a hyperspace tunnel to a distant planet whose politics make the job dangerous. Daily life aboard covers meals, pairings, a sentient computer, and the frictions among humans, Aandrisks, Grum, and others. The voyage itself, rather than a single battle, is the plot. The book is a character-centered space journey, not a war chronicle.
