London 1851

The Year of the Great Exhibition

By Eric de Maré · 1972

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This illustrated history reconstructs London in the year of the Great Exhibition. De Mare follows the planning of the international show in Hyde Park, Joseph Paxton's iron-and-glass Crystal Palace, and the crowds who came to see machinery, manufactures, and colonial goods assembled as a display of industry and empire. The text sets the fair against the city's streets, traffic, and public life in 1851, using contemporary prints, plans, and portraits to show how visitors moved through the building and how the capital looked that season. The book is a documentary account of one exhibition year, not a technical history of glasshouse engineering.
