This is a short book of mountain walking in the Cairngorms of Scotland. Shepherd describes approaching the plateau by its burns, corries, and ridges, then the feel of granite, mist, snow, and the thin air of the high ground. She attends to plants, birds, water, and the body's own senses - sight, smell, touch, and the altered attention that comes from moving slowly in wild weather. Human figures appear as walkers, stalkers, and loch fishers rather than as a plotted cast. The work is a personal essay on knowing one range from the inside, not a climbing narrative of summits and first ascents.
