Christopher Chant, a neglected boy from a family of powerful enchanters, discovers he can travel between parallel worlds while he sleeps. His charming but crooked uncle Ralph uses those gifts to smuggle forbidden goods, and Christopher is drawn into a trade that treats living creatures as cargo. As he learns the rules of magic and of the living nine-lived enchanter who holds the office of Chrestomanci, he must decide whose orders he will obey and what his own lives are for. The novel is a children's fantasy about apprenticeship and parallel worlds, not a sequel that depends on the later Chrestomanci books.
