Synopsis
First published in 1946, this children's novel sends orphan Maria Merryweather to Moonacre Manor in a West Country valley, where her uncle Sir Benjamin keeps a household of odd retainers. Maria meets the shepherd Robin, the cook Marmaduke Scarlet, and a small white horse that appears on the hills. An old feud between the Merryweathers and the men of the pine wood, together with a missing chalice and the valley's buried history, becomes her task to mend. The book is a pastoral romance for children, not a county history.
