First published in 1943, this novelette is told by a pilot grounded in the Sahara who meets a small boy fallen from asteroid B-612. The prince recounts his rose, his voyages to planets inhabited by a king, a vain man, a drunkard, a businessman, a lamplighter, and a geographer, and his days on Earth with a fox and a snake. Drawings of baobabs, sheep, and the rose interrupt the talk. The book is a fable of taming, departure, and what grown-ups fail to see, not an aviation memoir and not a textbook for children.
