The Little Grey Men

A Story for the Young in Heart

By BB' or Denys Watkins-Pitchford · 2008

Synopsis

First published in 1942, this children's novel follows three gnomes, Baldmoney, Sneezewort, and Dodder, who live on a Midland brook and set out to find their missing brother Cloudberry. They travel by boat and on foot through woods, weirs, and a great river, meeting otters, a stoat, and human gamekeepers, and they winter in the wild before the search turns homeward. The book attends to weather, birds, and the work of small hands. It is a countryside quest about the last gnomes in England, not a fairy-court romance.
