The Life of the Admiral Christopher Columbus

By His Son Ferdinand

By Ferdinand Columbus · 1960

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

Written in the sixteenth century by Columbus's second son, this biography follows Christopher Columbus from his Genoese youth and the long petitioning of Ferdinand and Isabella through the four Atlantic voyages, the founding and disorder of the Hispaniola settlements, arrest, and the last years of grants and lawsuits. Ferdinand defends his father's priority and character, quoting journals and royal papers. Islands, storms, and conflicts with colonists and officials structure the narrative. The book is a filial life of the admiral, not a general history of the Spanish empire.
