The Life of Dr John Donne

Late Dean of St.paul's Church, London

By Izaak Walton · 1988

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1640, this short biography follows John Donne from a Catholic youth and a career in law and satire through his secret marriage to Anne More, years of want, and his later life as an Anglican priest and Dean of St Paul's. Walton gathers letters, sermons, and anecdotes of illness and devotion, including Donne's last days and the monument for which he posed in a shroud. The book is a pious life, not a critical edition of the poems and not a history of the English church.
